Oxford University Press lays emphasis on Cognitive Skills; organises a language training program for the teachers of Ahmedabad

The workshop aimed at Enhancing Language Competency Skills through a Cognitive, Behavioural, and Visual Approach

Ahmedabad 23 November 2024 — Oxford University Press India (OUP), a department of the University of Oxford, organised a professional development program for the language teachers of Ahmedabad and neighbouring districts. The workshop-themed “Enhancing Language Competency Skills through a Cognitive, Behavioural, and Visual Approach” aimed at empowering teachers to create dynamic, student-centered learning environments that support holistic development, foster exploration and inquiry, and set the foundation for future success in the 21st century. The training program was designed in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) goals and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF 2023).

The training programme was designed and conducted by Ms. Prakriti Srivastava, an author and master trainer, associated with the Oxford University Press. During the workshop, she unveiled the latest edition of Echoes – a blended (print and digital) course in listening and speaking.  She introduced Ahmedabad’s teachers to effective communication techniques, emphasizing language skills for description, analysis, and response. She shared strategies for enhancing oral language abilities using complex sentence structures to convey ideas clearly. The session also addressed communication skills for everyday interactions in two languages. There were 110 Participants in this Programme.

Emphasizing the importance of cognitive skills in teaching practices, Ms. Srivastava engaged teachers in activities that enhance mental abilities to think, pay attention, process information, and remember things. These skills are crucial for daily life, work, and social interactions. Key cognitive skills include sustained attention, selective attention, memory, processing speed, logical reasoning, auditory processing, and visual processing. Understanding these skills is essential for teachers to comprehend children’s behaviour in the classroom and to implement age- and level-appropriate methodologies.

OUP has a proven track record of providing high-quality teacher trainings – – direct and online.  In 2023, OUP collaborated with CBSE and meticulously designed a research-based Capacity Building Programme – TSLP (Think–Share–Learn–Practice), for teachers to implement the National Curriculum Framework at Foundational Stage (NCF-FS). It continues to develop new and varied teacher training workshops and materials, thus facilitating wider outreach and penetration among teachers, across the country.

Participating educators appreciated the workshop for its engaging, activity-based teaching approaches and the valuable insights they gained for implementing NEP 2020 and NCF 2023 in their classrooms, setting students up for success.
